Tsuri Higuma (釣りヒグマ), The Fishing Brown Bear was done with my friend Hiroyuki in mind. Hiroyuki lives in Hokkaido Japan and has a fondness for bears. When I was doing research for this print I was surprised to learn about the Ussuri Brown Bear (Ursus arctos lasiotus). I always assumed that the bears of Hokkaido were the Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) as in other parts of Japan. That is not the case.
The Ussuri Brown Bears of Hokkaido are close relatives of the Brown Bears and Grizzlies of Russia and North America. The brown bears of Hokkaido can get big – really big…upwards of 1,300 lbs.
Tsuri Higuma (釣りヒグマ) is a piece of handmade original art ( edition of 20) – not a reproduction. It is linocut handprinted on unbleached Japanese rice paper with oil-based ink.
The image is approximately 6″x8″ and the print will be custom matted and be suitable for framing in an 8″x10″ frame (it is not framed.)
All materials are archival quality.
